But Titus Alone is a completely different animal altogether. Mervyn Peake's renowned trilogy of Gormenghast novels has become the subject of renewed interest from US producers, his son has said. Mervyn Peake, 1995, Overlook Press, 1168 pgs. It's an amazing novel in its own way, but it stands completely aloof from the first two novels of the series. The three novels--Titus Groan (1949), Gormenghast (1950), and Titus Alone (1959)--follow the main character, Titus Groan, from birth to manhood and chronicle his role as the reluctant ruler of Gormenghast. It is not my intention to narrate the actual books here (there's no point). The series consists of three novels, "Titus Groan" (1946), "Gormenghast" (1950), and "Titus Alone" (1959). Titus Alone (1959) is the third book in Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy, and is a significant departure from the previous novels. I have read the third book in the trilogy about three times – but though I have persevered, I found I could not seem to get into Titus Alone really. Mervyn Peake was a brilliant, badass English artist, illustrator, poet, and writer–today, he's best-known for his Titus books (Titus Groan, Gormenghast, Titus Alone, and, in a few short months, the posthumous Titus Awakes). The Gormenghast Trilogy, consisting of Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone is without a doubt the most painterly novel I've ever read. Review: Titus Alone by Mervyn Peake (Book 3, Gormeghast).
